Louisiana is a powerhouse state when it comes to cultural exports. Inseparable from Cajun culture, Louisiana’s contributions include foods like Beignets, Po’Boys, Gumbo, and Jambalaya. New Orleans is arguably the cultural center of the state, and it’s often thought of as the birthplace of jazz. The city allowed African Americans to live together freely and thus allowing their culture to flourish. As history progressed, Louisiana birthed some of the greatest musicians of the late 19th and early 20th century like Louis Armstrong and Allen Toussaint. With a reputation for partying and festivities, Louisiana seems to struggle more than most states with substance use. Mardi Gras draws over 1 million people every year and a large part of the celebration is engaging in heavy drinking. While not solely responsible, this kind of behavior explains the high rate of binge drinking in the state. Outside of alcohol, Louisiana struggles with overdose deaths due to Meth and some due to synthetic Opioids like Fentanyl.
