A place for both adults and families, Orlando attracts a huge variety of visitors; not everyone is there to attend Orlando’s attractions, however. According to the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Central Florida is considered a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, meaning that the area is a “significant center of illegal drug production, manufacturing, importation, or distribution,” and that “Drug-related activities in the area are having a significant harmful impact in the area and in other areas of the country,” among other criteria met by the region. The number of drug overdose deaths in Orlando skyrocketed in 2020. Orange County (the county in which Orlando is located) saw 84 drug overdose deaths in the first half of 2019. There were 131 drug overdose deaths in the first half of 2020. That is an increase of 56%. Most of these deaths are due to Opioids, however, drugs like Methamphetamine, Cocaine, and Heroin also play a role. At one point, 11 people died from a Heroin overdose within 24 hours in Orlando. The city of Orlando and other surrounding cities offer many options for drug or alcohol rehabilitation. Florida residents have the option of choosing from a local inpatient or outpatient center or choosing one near the beach or another waterway. During a time when drug overdose deaths are increasing, it is more important than ever to reach out for help and receive vital treatment.
