About Women in Need

Women In Need (WIN) is a nonprofit in Pearl City, on Oahu, that has helped women and their families since 1996 rebuild their lives after substance use, domestic violence, homelessness, and incarceration. Their approach is holistic and family-centered, focused on helping clients build sobriety, self-esteem, and the practical skills needed to live independently. Substance use care centers on an intensive outpatient program with separate groups for women and men, alongside clean and sober transitional housing on Oahu and Kauai. Women can live there with their children, which few similar programs allow, and re-entry planning often begins while a woman is still incarcerated.

The outpatient program runs six months in tiers, starting with three sessions a week, stepping down to two, and ending with weekly aftercare. Counselors provide group and individual work for people with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions, and they offer trauma-informed classes, including a 20-week anger management course and a 10-week healthy relationships course that covers safety planning and processing trauma while staying sober. Case managers help clients obtain vital documents and connect with NA and AA meetings, health care, and housing options such as Section 8 and rapid re-housing. Families can also get help with child welfare cases, mental health counseling, and crisis intervention, and a Hawaiian Culture Initiative weaves Hawaiian language lessons and work in local taro patches into recovery.
