About West Alabama Mental Health Center
West Alabama Mental Health Center is a community mental health center in Demopolis, Alabama, serving Choctaw, Greene, Hale, Marengo, and Sumter counties in the state’s Black Belt region. They treat mental illness, substance use disorders, intellectual disabilities, and serious emotional disorders in children. Their approach is recovery-oriented and centered on the individual, with an emphasis on keeping care in the community rather than in institutions. For addiction, they provide outpatient counseling and refer people to inpatient treatment when more intensive care is needed, and as a National Health Service Corps site they use a sliding fee scale so no one is turned away for inability to pay.
Their Outpatient Substance Use Program includes assessment, individual and group therapy, family therapy when appropriate, and ongoing monitoring, along with connections to outside services they don’t offer directly. Admission priority goes to pregnant individuals (especially those who inject drugs), people who use intravenously, women with dependent children, and people who are HIV positive. New and returning clients can get a same-day assessment on Tuesdays and Thursdays, whether they walk in, call, or use telehealth. They also run a court referral education program for people facing alcohol, drug, or domestic violence charges, and they offer 24/7 crisis services, case management, and supported employment.
