About Wellspring Inc

Wellspring is a Bangor, Maine, treatment provider offering trauma-informed care for substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions, with a focus on people who have little or no income. Their continuum starts with New Horizons, a short-term detox program of about three to seven days for adults withdrawing from opiates or alcohol. It continues with long-term residential programs for men, for women, and for mothers with young children, along with individual outpatient counseling. Their roots run deep: the men’s program opened as the Bangor Halfway House in 1968, and the women’s program, opened in 1981, was the first halfway house for women in Maine.

Each residential program typically lasts four to six months and is built for adults 18 and older with a history of chronic substance use who arrive free of mood-altering substances on the day of admission. Residents take part in individual, group, and family counseling, as well as psychoeducational groups on addiction, relapse prevention, and coping skills, with women’s recovery topics included in the women’s program. Daily life includes household chores, house meetings, and 12-Step or other mutual aid participation. In later phases, residents can earn weekend passes and begin volunteering, working, or returning to school, and a Client Care Coordinator and an Integration Specialist help them line up community support for life after discharge. Infinity House, a 10-bed home for pregnant and parenting mothers of children up to age five, adds a focus on parenting skills, and family visits are encouraged across the programs as long as visitors are sober, safe, and willing to follow program rules.
