About Wells House
Wells House is a substance use disorder treatment provider based in Hagerstown, Maryland, with more than 50 years of experience serving adults. Alongside behavioral health services, they offer a stepped continuum that runs from Level 3.1 residential care, in houses located in Hagerstown and Frederick, to an intensive outpatient program (IOP) and lower-intensity outpatient treatment. Most people begin in residential care or IOP and move to less intensive services as they stabilize, with referrals to recovery or transitional housing when that fits. Their approach centers on keeping people engaged in care while helping them rebuild work, school, and family life.
Across every level, counselors draw on cognitive behavioral counseling, motivational interviewing, patient-centered counseling, and problem-solving strategies, and each person helps set their own treatment plan goals. Planning also addresses practical needs such as housing, food, transportation, medical and mental health care, employment, and education. Residents follow a structured daily schedule with set wake-up times, a curfew, and weekly house meetings, and they receive a peer mentor on arrival, regular individual counseling, family counseling, and encouragement to attend AA or NA and find a sponsor. IOP meets four times a week for three-hour morning, afternoon, or evening groups focused on coping skills, anger management, triggers, and relapse prevention, while outpatient groups run in the afternoons and evenings to fit around jobs and childcare.
