About Wells House
Wells House is a substance use treatment provider in Hagerstown, Maryland, with more than 50 years of experience serving adults with substance use disorders. They offer a stepped continuum of care that includes Level 3.1 residential treatment in several houses across Hagerstown and Frederick, an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), and lower-intensity outpatient services. Most people start in residential care or IOP and move to less intensive services as they stabilize, with referrals to recovery or transitional housing when appropriate. Their approach pairs counseling with practical support around food, housing, transportation, medical and mental health care, employment, and education.
Counseling across all levels draws on cognitive behavioral techniques, motivational interviewing, patient-centered counseling, and problem-solving strategies, and each person sets goals for their own treatment plan. Residents are paired with a peer in the house when they arrive, attend regular therapy groups and individual sessions, and are encouraged to attend local AA or NA meetings and find a sponsor, while family counseling is open to parents, spouses, and other relatives. The residential program runs on a firm daily structure, with set wake-up and meal times, a 5:00 p.m. return time, a 10:00 p.m. curfew, and a required Sunday house meeting. IOP meets four times a week for three-hour morning, afternoon, or evening groups covering coping skills, anger management, triggers, and relapse prevention, and standard outpatient care adds afternoon and evening group and individual sessions, peer support, and case management for people balancing work, school, or child care.
