About Volunteers of America (VOA) Alaska

Volunteers of America Alaska is a nonprofit behavioral health provider in Anchorage offering substance use and mental health care to youth, young adults, and their families at low or no cost. Their person-centered, strength-based approach addresses substance misuse alongside trauma, anxiety, depression, anger, and oppositional behaviors, so teens can keep working with the same team on mental health after finishing substance use treatment. Care ranges from standard outpatient (under six hours a week) to intensive outpatient (six or more hours), day treatment, and partial hospitalization, with residential treatment at their Adolescent Residential Center for Help (ARCH). They accept Medicaid and most private insurance, offer sliding-scale fees and payment plans, and turn no one away for inability to pay.

Every outpatient level combines individual, group, and family therapy with family support groups and case management from peer support specialists, and psychiatric evaluations and medication management are available when needed. Their Christopher Walden Pathways of Hope day treatment program pairs academics with therapy, while clinicians draw on talk therapy, art and recreational therapy, and EMDR. Young adults ages 18 to 24 receive wraparound support that includes employment and education help, and telehealth counseling reaches Alaskans ages 11 to 24 anywhere in the state. Programs are CARF-accredited, and admission is prioritized for youth who are pregnant, injecting substances, involved with child services or juvenile justice, or experiencing homelessness.
