About Volunteer Behavioral Health

Volunteer Behavioral Health is a nonprofit, CARF-accredited community behavioral health organization with a presence in Smyrna, Tennessee, and outpatient centers across the middle, southeast, and Upper Cumberland regions of the state. For more than 60 years they have served adults, children, and families dealing with mental illness, substance use disorders, and co-occurring conditions. Their No Wrong Door/Same Day Access model aims to connect people with services within 24 hours of calling intake. Their substance use care includes outpatient counseling, medication management, medication-assisted treatment, intensive outpatient programming, and peer support, plus 24/7 medically monitored detox at their Cookeville and Murfreesboro campuses, with residential treatment planned for Cookeville.

Outpatient care begins with an evaluation that shapes an individualized plan, which can combine individual, family, and group counseling, offered in person at all of their locations or by phone. Their IOP meets in groups for at least three hours a day, three days a week, and includes ongoing aftercare support. Mothers can join the Women’s CHOICES Program in Chattanooga or Cookeville, which pairs intensive outpatient groups with certified peer support, parenting classes, care management, drug testing, and transportation. They also run court- and probation-referred treatment for people involved with the justice system, the FindingMyRecovery online peer community with recovery-coach-moderated chat meetings, and, in Smyrna, a free Regional Intervention Program that coaches parents of children up to age six through challenging behaviors.
