About VOA Recovery

VOA Recovery is the substance use recovery program of Volunteers of America Mid-States, a Louisville, Kentucky nonprofit and interdenominational church that has served the region since 1896. They work with men and women affected by substance use disorder, including people leaving incarceration, with a strong focus on pregnant and parenting women. Their main level of care is Freedom House, a residential program for mothers and expectant mothers dependent on alcohol or drugs. It opened in Louisville in 1993, later expanded to Clay County, and is growing into Daviess, Lincoln, and Kenton counties. Licensed clinicians deliver evidence-based care, and their facilities hold Council on Accreditation accreditation.

Freedom House treats the whole family, aiming to interrupt generational substance use, reunite families separated by addiction, and support healthy, drug-free births. Women with young children can move on to the Women’s Transitional Living Program, a sober home for up to seven families, where fees are based on income and stays can last up to two years so mothers can work, save, or pursue school. Family Recovery Court helps parents in eligible Kentucky counties become steady caregivers through coordinated community services, and the Family Connections Program works with the Department for Community Based Services on early intervention to keep children safely at home. Recovery Community Centers in several counties also offer peer recovery support, education, and a welcoming place for people in recovery and their families to connect.
