About Vinland National Center
Vinland National Center in Loretto, Minnesota, about 20 miles west of Minneapolis, provides drug and alcohol addiction treatment for adults with co-occurring cognitive impairments, including traumatic brain injuries, memory problems, learning disabilities, and mental health conditions. Since 1990, they have built their program around people who have struggled to keep up with the pace or assignments in conventional treatment, adapting care to each person’s learning style and cognitive needs. Their rural lakeside campus offers residential treatment for adult men, typically lasting 45 to 90 days. They also run an outpatient program for all genders in Northeast Minneapolis, outpatient problem gambling treatment, and sober supportive housing.
Groups move at a moderate pace with frequent repetition and varied teaching methods, and each client works one-on-one with a case manager. Residential clients receive integrated, on-site mental health care from a psychologist, psychiatrist, and nursing staff, along with trauma-responsive services and a personalized exercise program designed by an exercise physiologist for those dealing with chronic pain or brain injury. Both programs include an adapted mindfulness meditation curriculum developed with the University of Minnesota’s Center for Spirituality & Healing, and outpatient clients can take part in art therapy during morning groups held four days a week. A family and support system program was restarted in 2026. They accept Medical Assistance, most insurance plans, and state treatment funds, and the residential program does not start new stimulant prescriptions for ADHD, favoring non-stimulant options instead.
