Independence Hall is an alcohol and drug treatment center in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, set on 22 wooded acres with fields, walking trails, and outdoor meeting areas. Their staff, nicknamed “The Recovery Renegades,” ground their work in evidence-based practices but deliver it in a relaxed, unconventional style built around health, work, play, and love. Care includes Clinical Stabilization Services (CSS), a 24-hour Level III inpatient program that usually follows medical detox, along with a day treatment program offering intensive outpatient support and weekly outpatient group and individual counseling. Veteran status isn’t required, and they accept insurance, self-pay, and uninsured clients, as well as self-referrals and agency referrals.

The CSS program serves medically cleared adults over 18 who are at risk of relapse, with stays averaging about 14 days and extensions possible depending on medical need and insurance. Treatment starts with a medical screening, psychosocial assessment, and substance use history, which shape an individualized treatment and aftercare plan. Each day includes about eight hours of therapy and hands-on learning, with clinicians drawing on cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and motivational enhancement therapy. Groups cover life skills, relapse prevention, substance use and HIV/AIDS/STD education, AA/NA, tai chi, and expressive arts, outdoor activities are part of the regular schedule, and loved ones may be invited to join a counseling session by phone.
