About Veterans Alcoholic Rehab Prog (VARP)

VARP, Inc. is a drug and alcohol treatment provider based in San Bernardino, California, serving residents of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties since 1979. Department store owner Mel Harris founded the organization to expand treatment for veterans, and they now offer a full continuum of care for adults struggling with alcohol and drug use. Services include 24/7 clinically managed withdrawal management, residential treatment, recovery residences, medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder, and outpatient care. Medi-Cal members are admitted through the county substance use screening lines, and private pay is also accepted.

Residential care at Gibson House follows a structured daily schedule, and most people stay between 30 and 90 days while working toward personal goals and accountability. Detox begins with an evaluation of medical, mental health, and substance use needs, and staff plan the move into residential or ongoing treatment from there. The Stephen P. Levine Center’s outpatient program, currently open to individuals on parole with low to moderate treatment needs, combines cognitive behavioral interventions and individual counseling with life skills, education and literacy, and job development support. Many of their staff are in recovery themselves, and graduates can stay connected through the VALOR alumni association and sober living homes that encourage work, school, and peer support.
