Valley HealthCare System is a community behavioral health center based in Fairmont, West Virginia, serving adults and families across Marion, Monongalia, Preston, and Taylor counties since 1969. They treat substance use disorders involving alcohol, prescription medications, and illicit drugs alongside mental illness and intellectual and developmental disabilities, and they view addiction as a health condition rather than a personal failing. Their substance use care includes 24/7 crisis intervention, medically monitored withdrawal, gender-specific residential treatment, outpatient services, medication-assisted treatment, and peer recovery support. They also offer primary care, so physical health concerns can be addressed alongside recovery.

Withdrawal management takes place in their Crisis Residential Unit, a physician-overseen setting where clients receive round-the-clock supervision, tapered medication for symptoms, and group sessions on coping skills, typically over three to seven days after receiving medical clearance at a local emergency room. From there, clients can move directly into longer-term care at the same Valley Treatment Center campus, including the ACT Unit for men and the New Beginnings program for women. The men’s program pairs individualized, collaboratively built treatment plans with individual and group counseling on triggers, cravings, and managing anger without substances, and stays range from a few days to several months, with extended stays of up to six months available. Case managers help plan for life after discharge, and clients can connect with community providers and peer mentors who have lived through recovery themselves and stay available for as long as they’re needed.
