About The Shoulder

The Shoulder is a faith-based, nonprofit-style addiction treatment provider on Alabama’s Gulf Coast, serving the region since 1985. Their men’s campus is in Spanish Fort, and a women’s facility in Mobile opened in 2021. They offer affordable care for adults struggling with alcohol and drug use in a Christian setting built on three pillars: spirituality, recovery orientation, and the twelve steps. Their levels of care include high-intensity residential treatment for women, low-intensity residential treatment for both men and women, transitional residential living for men, and a newer low-intensity outpatient program.

Everyone starts with a $75 assessment, and priority goes to pregnant individuals, people who inject drugs, women with dependent children, and those who are HIV positive. In the women’s high-intensity program, clients spend structured days in individual and group counseling, spiritual development, life skills work, and community recovery meetings. The low-intensity residential track lets clients hold a job during the day and attend therapeutic sessions in the evening, with Sunday family visits that follow a one-hour family group. Men who complete residential care can step down into a transitional program with more independence, and graduates of all programs can return for weekly alumni groups. Veterans can join groups led by counselors who have served themselves.
