About Stepstone Connect

Stepstone Connect, based in Bountiful, Utah, runs a virtual intensive outpatient program built specifically for first responders, including police officers, firefighters, paramedics, EMTs, and military and National Guard members. They treat substance use disorders, alcohol addiction, and behavioral addictions alongside PTSD, acute stress disorder, depression, anxiety, mood disorders, and grief. Care is offered through two tracks, a Dual Diagnosis IOP for people dealing with both mental health and substance use concerns and a Mental Health IOP focused on trauma, burnout, and emotional regulation. The program works well as a step down after inpatient treatment or a step up for those who need more than weekly therapy.

Participants join first responder-only groups of about eight people, meeting three hours a day, three days a week, for roughly 12 weeks, with day and evening options available on a secure video platform. Each week also includes an hour of individual therapy with a primary clinician, and group blocks combine dual diagnosis process work with recovery skills and education. Their clinicians are trained in a wide range of approaches, including EMDR, Brainspotting, cognitive processing therapy, trauma-focused CBT, DBT, ACT, and motivational interviewing. Retired first responders and veterans are part of the team, which helps clients feel understood by people who know the realities of the job.
