STEPS (Specialized Treatment, Education, and Prevention Services) is a private nonprofit, community-based substance use treatment organization based in Orlando, Florida, serving adults across Central Florida since a group of local citizens founded it in 1983. Their person-centered approach recognizes many pathways to recovery, welcomes people at any point regardless of past treatment, and responds quickly when someone relapses. Care spans adult outpatient, intensive outpatient, day treatment, and a women’s residential therapeutic community, with support for co-occurring mental health conditions. Priority goes to people who are pregnant or postpartum, inject drugs, are raising children, or have limited financial means.

Counseling draws on cognitive behavioral group therapy, network therapy, motivational interviewing, and individual, couples, and family sessions, with specialized groups for women and mothers. Families are kept together where possible: young children can attend day treatment with a parent, and infants or small children can live with their mothers in the residential program, including babies born during treatment. For opioid and alcohol use disorders, they offer medication-assisted treatment with naltrexone (Vivitrol), buprenorphine, and methadone through walk-in Orlando clinics that require no insurance and provide transportation, plus a mobile unit bringing MAT, primary care, and harm reduction services to uninsured residents of Brevard and Orange Counties. Additional programs include 24/7 case management that connects people to housing, food, medical, and employment resources, an opioid navigator who helps with career development, and a treatment program inside the Orange County Jail.
