About Stand Together and Recover Centers
Stand Together and Recover Centers (S.T.A.R.) in Mesa, Arizona, is an Arizona-licensed Outpatient Treatment Center and peer-run mental health provider serving adults and young adults living with mental health challenges. They began in 1985, when four people discharged from a psychiatric unit at Maricopa Medical Center started supporting one another through the return to community life, and they grew into Arizona’s first peer-run mental health organization. Their approach pairs the insight of staff with lived experience with licensed outpatient care, aiming to build stability, independence, and community connection. Services are AHCCCS-eligible and offered at no cost to those who qualify.
Peer support specialists work with members on personal recovery goals and skill-building, while licensed professionals provide counseling as part of an individualized treatment plan. Daily groups cover coping skills, emotional regulation, budgeting, daily living, and art-based and wellness activities, and a dedicated track for young adults ages 18 to 29 focuses on confidence and the transition into adulthood. Their Peer Discharge Care Coordination program offers 90 days of wraparound support for people leaving psychiatric hospitalization, and the Fun Bunch hosts peer-led outings and evening social events to ease isolation. Members can also access hot meals, food and clothing closets, and hygiene supplies, along with CPR, First Aid, and Food Handler courses that support employment readiness.
