About Southern Iowa Mental Health Center
Southern Iowa Mental Health Center (SIMHC) is a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic in Ottumwa, Iowa, serving five counties through their main clinic and several outreach offices across southern Iowa. Founded in 1966, they provide outpatient mental health therapy, medication management, and substance use treatment, and they added addiction services in 2018 for adults and youth ages 12 and older. Their care centers on the belief that recovery from mental illness and substance use is achievable. No referral is needed, they accept Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance, and a sliding fee scale ensures no one is turned away for inability to pay.
Substance use care begins with a one-on-one evaluation by a certified counselor, who uses ASAM criteria to recommend a level of care. Options include intensive and extended outpatient programs that combine group and individual sessions, with an emphasis on education, journaling, and building coping skills, as well as standalone individual counseling with a treatment plan developed together with the client. Graduates can continue in aftercare focused on sustained abstinence, and court-ordered OWI evaluations are available to non-clients. Broader supports include CBT, mindfulness therapy, EMDR, peer support, care coordination, a 24-hour crisis line with a mobile crisis team, telehealth through a patient app, and an on-site Genoa pharmacy.
