About Sojourner House

Sojourner House is a long-term residential drug and alcohol treatment program in Pittsburgh’s East End for mothers with substance use disorder, who live on-site with their children during treatment. They serve up to 14 families at a time with 24/7 support, and each family gets its own apartment, so mothers can practice everyday sober parenting while still in intensive care. Women must be 18 or older, be pregnant or have at least one child 12 or younger, be working toward custody if not pregnant, and be committed to recovery. Admission is by referral only, and pregnant women receive priority.

Treatment includes individual, group, and family counseling delivered through a trauma-informed, gender-affirming approach, with connections to community resources as families prepare to move on. Children are screened and assessed when they arrive, and school-aged kids get help with uniforms, transportation, and Individualized Education Plans when needed, along with learning centers, after-school activities, and indoor and outdoor play spaces. After treatment, families can continue through the MOMS transitional housing program, which offers up to a year of housing for parents with at least 90 days clean and accepts co-occurring mental health conditions. A permanent supportive housing option, available through referral from the Allegheny County LINK, serves formerly chronically homeless families and adds case management, job readiness training, and parenting and life skills counseling.
