Second Chance Inc is a community-based substance use treatment provider serving Hayward, California, and the surrounding East Bay. They work with people who arrive in many ways, including court referrals, pressure from family or employers, and their own decision to seek help. Their approach treats abstinence as the safest goal for people with serious, long-standing drug or alcohol problems, while recognizing that some people with milder issues can change their patterns, and that others need time to work out what kind of problem they have. Their services include individual treatment, social model services, court-ordered programs, and a dedicated women’s program.

Treatment has no time limits or deadlines, clients set their own goals, and no one is discharged for relapsing or turned away for returning too many times. The Phoenix Women’s Recovery Program offers an all-female setting with intake and assessment, treatment planning, one-to-one counseling, group support, and case management. Phoenix also helps with women’s issues, pregnancy and parenting, stress reduction, co-occurring concerns, anger management, transportation, and connections to outside community services, and free cooperative child care is available. For people referred by a court, probation, or Child Protective Services, they run fee-based diversion classes on a sliding scale, including First Offender DUI, PC1000 drug diversion, anger management, domestic non-violence support for perpetrators, and the Kids Deserve Better parenting program.
