Second Chance Inc is a substance abuse treatment provider in Newark, California, that works with people facing drug and alcohol problems, whether they come through the courts, at the urging of family or employers, or on their own. They see abstinence as the safest goal for people with chronic or serious substance use, while recognizing that some people with less severe problems can change their patterns, and that others need time to figure out what works. Their services include individual treatment, social model services, court-ordered programs, and a dedicated women’s program. There are no time limits or deadlines, nobody is discharged for relapsing, and people are welcome back no matter how many times they have tried before.

Core services across their programs include intake and assessment, treatment planning, one-to-one counseling, group support, and case management, with help transitioning from formal treatment to self-care and community support. The Phoenix Women’s Recovery Program offers an all-female setting with added support around women’s issues, pregnancy and child nurturing, stress reduction, co-occurring issues, and anger management, along with transportation to services, links to outside community resources, and free cooperative child care. For those referred by a court, probation, or Children’s Protective Services, they run diversion programs, including First Offender DUI, PC1000 Drug Diversion, Anger Management, Domestic Non-Violence Support for perpetrators, and the Kids Deserve Better parenting class. These diversion classes run for a set number of sessions, mix education with discussion, and are paid through client fees on a sliding scale, unlike their treatment services.
