About Sandstone Care Alexandria
Sandstone Care Alexandria is an outpatient treatment center in Alexandria, Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C., serving teens, young adults, and their families. They treat substance use involving alcohol, marijuana, stimulants, and opioids, and they also address co-occurring mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, and trauma. Care is offered through a partial hospitalization program (PHP) and an intensive outpatient program (IOP), with programs typically running between four and twelve weeks. Clients who need more structure can be referred to Sandstone’s adult detox center in Chantilly, Virginia, or its teen residential center in Crownsville, Maryland.
PHP provides more frequent, structured care for those who need closer support, while IOP lets clients keep up with school or work and live at home during treatment. Programming combines individual, group, and family therapy with evidence-based approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), alongside medication management when appropriate. Groups are kept small and organized by age, so clients work through challenges with peers at a similar stage of life, and academic and vocational support helps them stay on track. Families take part through family therapy sessions every other week, where they practice communication and boundary-setting and work on the underlying issues that affect long-term recovery.
