About San Francisco AIDS Foundation
San Francisco AIDS Foundation (SFAF) is a community health organization in San Francisco whose substance use services center on The Stonewall Project, a state-certified outpatient drug and alcohol program for gay, bisexual, and queer men, other men who have sex with men, and trans and non-binary people. Their work is grounded in harm reduction, so there is no requirement to stop using before getting help. Personal goals can range from full abstinence to cutting back on a specific substance or simply using more safely. Alongside counseling, they offer Suboxone for opioid use disorder through a San Francisco Department of Public Health street medicine team and can connect people to methadone providers in the city.
The core enrolled counseling program asks participants to attend at least two peer support groups each week, with individual sessions added when appropriate and when counselors are available. Drop-in groups, both virtual and in person, require no intake or wait, and SFAF partners with The Harm Reduction Therapy Center for walk-in counseling at their 6th Street Center on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Their 12-week Positive Reinforcement Opportunity Project (PROP) uses contingency management, pairing structure, counseling, and financial incentives to help people reduce or quit meth, cocaine, or other stimulants. A separate 30-day incentivized program helps people starting medications for opioid use disorder through intake and adherence, with medication lockers available, and SFAF also provides hepatitis C testing and treatment without requiring sobriety or insurance, as well as Enhanced Care Management for San Francisco Health Plan members.
