About Richmond Behavioral Health Authority
Richmond Behavioral Health Authority (RBHA) is the public community services board for the City of Richmond, Virginia, offering mental health, substance use, intellectual disability, and prevention services under one roof. For addiction care, they work with adults and adolescents, including many with co-occurring mental health conditions, and use ASAM criteria to place each person in the right level of care. Options range from standard outpatient and intensive outpatient to buprenorphine and methadone treatment and residential care, with withdrawal management also among the recommended services. Most people begin through Rapid Access, a same-day weekday intake for Richmond residents focused on Medicaid and underinsured clients, where they are assigned a case manager who coordinates treatment, housing, employment, and medical needs.
Their North Campus residential facility in Highland Park can serve up to 182 people and houses a men’s program with groups such as trauma education, anger management, gardening, and smoking cessation, along with a women’s program that prioritizes pregnant and parenting women and lets children under 11 stay with their mothers and attend an on-site children’s program. Adult intensive outpatient runs at least nine hours a week across three days and blends trauma-based therapy, skills work, and relapse prevention, while teens ages 13 to 17 can join a six-hour weekly program using Cannabis Youth Treatment and the Community Reinforcement Approach. People with opioid use disorder can receive buprenorphine through the office-based clinic, which pairs medication with counseling from clinicians and peer specialists, primary care, and an in-house pharmacy, or methadone through the Recovery Plus program. A dedicated Women’s Services team adds gender-responsive, trauma-informed support for pregnant and parenting women, including parenting education, child-minding, transportation, and peer recovery support.
