About Project Renewal Inc
Project Renewal is a New York City nonprofit that has worked for more than 55 years to end homelessness by pairing housing with health care and employment support. They serve roughly 10,000 New Yorkers each year, with a focus on people who keep cycling through emergency rooms, jails, and shelters. That includes adults with substance use disorders, people with physical or mental disabilities, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and older adults. Substance use treatment is part of a broader health offering that also includes medical and psychiatric care, and they provide emergency, transitional, and permanent housing to nearly 4,000 people a year.
One notable program is the Parole Support and Treatment Program, which begins working with people who have a mental health diagnosis while they are still incarcerated. It moves them straight into transitional or permanent supportive housing on release, so they avoid the shelter system. Participants meet weekly with a team of psychiatrists, nurses, occupational therapists, and case managers. Through that team they can get counseling, mental health and substance use services, crisis intervention, peer support, and life skills training. Job training runs through all of their programming, including a two-week human services course, a paid internship placing participants in shelters and supportive housing sites, and ongoing career coaching to help people keep their jobs and advance.
