About Project Reality

Project Reality is a nonprofit outpatient substance use treatment program in Salt Lake City, Utah, that has served the state for more than 50 years and also operates a clinic in nearby Murray. They work with adults facing opioid use disorder, alcohol use disorder, and other substance use disorders, pairing medication-based treatment with on-site primary care and mental health services. Their philosophy centers on harm reduction, reducing stigma, and meeting each person’s own goals, and they turn no one away because of income, insurance status, or inability to pay.

Medication options include methadone, oral and injectable buprenorphine, and long-acting naltrexone, supported by drug testing, smoking cessation help, and harm reduction services. New patients are matched with a mental health specialist who helps them settle into the program and build an individualized recovery plan, with individual and group counseling, case management, and peer recovery coaches who bring lived experience. Because their medical team works alongside therapists, patients can also get care for chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension, preventive screenings, family planning, psychiatric medication management, and testing and treatment for hepatitis C and sexually transmitted infections. Case managers also assist with practical needs such as housing, transportation, and medical insurance.
