About OBrien House
O’Brien House is a nonprofit addiction recovery center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, that has served adults struggling with alcohol and drug addiction since 1971. Named for Paul S. “Pat” O’Brien, who spent decades working with alcoholics, they ground their approach in 12-Step principles, spirituality, honesty, and acceptance of each person. They offer a structured residential program for men and women, along with several levels of outpatient care. They also welcome indigent and homeless clients, which sets them apart locally for people with limited resources.
Their roughly three-month residential program follows ASAM criteria and moves through three phases, Stability, Balance, and Maintenance, each with clear goals. Clients receive housing, meals, individual and group counseling, and therapy that draws on cognitive-behavioral, rational emotive, and motivational enhancement approaches. As they progress, residents find a sponsor, take part in life skills and job readiness training, secure employment, build savings, and create a detailed aftercare plan. For those who can live independently, outpatient options include a weekly ASEP group, an eight-week intensive outpatient program meeting three times a week in morning or evening sessions, and a shorter outpatient aftercare group, with Medicaid and self-pay accepted.
