About Northwood Health Systems
Northwood Health Systems is a community behavioral health organization in Wheeling, West Virginia, serving the Ohio Valley with addiction treatment alongside mental health and intellectual disability care. For people struggling with drugs or alcohol, they offer a continuum that begins with medically monitored detox in a crisis stabilization unit and continues through intensive outpatient treatment, ongoing counseling, and medication-assisted treatment. During detox, patients stay on the unit around the clock, see a psychiatrist or physician extender daily, have constant nursing access, and take part in group and individual therapy. Staff strongly encourage continued care afterward, since withdrawal management is only the first step.
Their First Step Intensive Outpatient Program is built for people with moderate to severe addiction, or those who haven’t made progress in less intensive care, and combines daily group therapy, individual counseling, and skill-building around relapse prevention and coping while participants live at home. Adults with opioid use disorder can receive medically supervised MAT that pairs FDA-approved medications such as buprenorphine (Suboxone) or naltrexone (Vivitrol) with counseling and behavioral therapy. For stimulant use, their TRUST contingency management program rewards treatment engagement, abstinence, and goal achievement with structured incentives. They also run state-approved DUI safety and treatment classes, offer psychiatric care and psychological evaluation for co-occurring conditions, and provide weekday transportation to outpatient appointments for established clients.
