Northwest Integrated Health (NWIH) is a network of clinics based in Tacoma, Washington, with additional sites in Lakewood, Puyallup, and Parkland, focused on treating substance use disorder with an emphasis on opioid addiction. They view opioid addiction as a chronic disease and use medication to stabilize patients and reduce harm, paired with care for the chemical, biological, psychological, and social sides of a person’s life. Many patients come to them through referrals from care navigators, hospitals, local jails, drug courts, and needle exchanges, and their treatment plans are revisited and adjusted as a person’s needs change.

Each new patient is assessed by a physician and a chemical dependency professional, and together they choose evidence-based options suited to the severity of the illness. Their opioid treatment program offers liquid methadone at the Tacoma South and Lakewood clinics, which requires patients to see both a mental health provider and a chemical dependency counselor, while injectable buprenorphine and oral or injectable naltrexone (Vivitrol) are available at every location, with naloxone co-prescribed alongside methadone and buprenorphine. Medication is combined with chemical dependency counseling, mental health counseling with clinical psychologists and social workers, peer counseling, group support, and recovery coaching, plus on-site primary care, wound care, and Hepatitis C testing and treatment. They offer a sliding fee scale based on income and family size, accept Washington Apple Health and several commercial insurers, and provide courtesy dosing for patients who are away from their home clinic.
