About NM Department of Health

Turquoise Lodge Hospital is a state-run substance use treatment hospital in Albuquerque, operated by the New Mexico Department of Health and serving adults since 1953. They treat New Mexico residents 18 and older for alcohol and drug addiction through medical detox, inpatient social model rehabilitation, and intensive outpatient (IOP) care. Their aim is to give people a safe, compassionate place to begin healing with evidence-based practices, then connect them with recovery programs in their home communities across the state. Priority for admission goes to pregnant and parenting women, people who inject drugs, and men and women working to regain custody of their children.

Medical detox takes place in a hospital setting with round-the-clock physician and nursing care, usually lasting 5 to 10 days, and it can serve people whose withdrawal may involve added medical or psychiatric complications. From there, many patients move into the social rehabilitation program, a 25- to 30-day inpatient stay with daily counseling, structured programming, and introductions to peer and community recovery supports. For residents of the greater Albuquerque area, the IOP focuses on relapse prevention, meeting several times a week for 3 to 6 months. Care is delivered by licensed medical, psychiatric, pharmacy, nursing, and counseling staff trained in addiction medicine, the campus is tobacco-free, visitors are not permitted during treatment, and admission begins with a phone assessment that typically happens within 1 to 3 business days of a request.
