About New Found Life

New Found Life is a family-owned addiction treatment center in Long Beach, California, founded more than 30 years ago by Edward and Mary Ann Spatola after their own recovery through Alcoholics Anonymous. Their program pairs clinical therapy with full 12-Step immersion, emphasizing honesty, accountability, and service as a foundation for long-term recovery rather than short-term sobriety. They treat alcohol, opioid, and other substance use disorders, along with co-occurring mental health conditions. Levels of care include a 28-day gender-specific residential program, partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP), extended continuing care of up to 12 weeks, sober living, and aftercare, and they coordinate medically supervised detox elsewhere before admission when it’s needed.

Clinical work draws on cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, motivational enhancement therapy, and individual and group sessions, supported by psychiatric care and medication-assisted treatment when appropriate. Residents also take part in life skills training, career and educational support, yoga, and meditation, and they share meals, daily chores, and meetings to build real connection with peers. Outpatient care is tied to 12-Step progress and opens to clients once they reach the 10th Step. Families play a central role through an intensive family program, weekly multi-family groups, and Wednesday night Zoom support meetings, while a 4,500-plus alumni community and a staff that includes many former clients offer ongoing mentorship, which may especially appeal to people who have relapsed after previous treatment.
