About Native American Rehabilitation
Native American Rehabilitation Association of the Northwest (NARA NW) is an American Indian-owned and -operated nonprofit in Portland, Oregon, that has served American Indian and Alaska Native communities since 1970. They began as an outpatient substance use treatment center and now offer both residential and outpatient addiction treatment for people of all ages, along with mental health, primary care, dental, and social services. Their approach centers on the family, built on the belief that healing an individual depends on the strength of the family circle. While their focus is on AI/AN people, they also welcome others who seek their care.
Traditional Native culture and spirituality are woven into their treatment, and sacred items such as a ceremonial pipe and drum are still used in ceremonies, with a totem pole marking the entrance to their residential facility. Their residential program is designed as a family treatment center, and participants can also connect with transitional housing, adult mental health services, child and family services, and a wellness center. Because NARA NW is a Federally Qualified Health Center, clients can address medical needs such as family medicine, women’s exams, diabetes care, and tobacco cessation alongside recovery, and same-day hepatitis C testing and treatment are available at no cost. They serve patients regardless of ability to pay and offer sliding-scale discounts based on family size and income.
