National Capital Treatment & Recovery, formerly Phoenix House Mid-Atlantic, is a nonprofit addiction treatment organization based in Arlington, Virginia, with roots in the Washington, D.C. area that go back to 1962. Their clinicians take an evidence-based, cognitive-behavioral approach to substance use disorder and co-occurring conditions, combining counseling with medication and withdrawal management. Care ranges from intensive residential programs, including separate programs for men, women, and Arlington County residents, to step-down residential housing, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and ongoing outpatient support. They accept most major insurance plans, Virginia Medicaid, and several military and veteran health plans, and they offer financial assistance to eligible people who can’t afford care.

At their Fairfax County counseling center, adults can move through a tiered outpatient track that begins with a partial hospital program of six hours a day, five days a week, for four to six weeks. From there, patients can step down to intensive outpatient care of three-hour sessions three times weekly for up to 12 weeks, followed by outpatient continuing care that tapers to monthly visits over six to twelve months. An office-based medication-assisted treatment program, overseen by a nurse practitioner and a psychiatrist, treats opioid and alcohol use disorders for adults and adolescents. Across their programs, care is trauma-informed and includes individual and group counseling, psychoeducation, EMDR when available, and family involvement, while Recovery Haven in Alexandria gives women a low-intensity residential setting with case management, life skills training, and workforce development support.
