About Middlesex Human Service Agency Inc

Middlesex Human Service Agency (MHSA) is a Greater Boston nonprofit that runs recovery, shelter, and food programs for people facing addiction, homelessness, and hunger, with several residential recovery sites in Boston neighborhoods. They trace their roots to 1977, when addiction professionals opened an alcohol and drug treatment center in Waltham, and substance use treatment remains a core part of their work. Their recovery services include up to six months of residential treatment for adult men, a family residential recovery home for parents in early recovery, and a two-week DUIL program. Their holistic approach looks at the whole person, aiming to rebuild mental, physical, and emotional health alongside sobriety.

The men’s program operates out of three houses: Answer House in South Boston with 28 beds, Sullivan House in Jamaica Plain with 25 beds, and Hurley House in Waltham with 20 beds. Residents receive clinical oversight and individualized support focused on finding work, reconnecting with family and community, and setting long-term recovery goals, and those who complete the program move on to stable sober living. Brookford House in Dorchester serves up to 18 families, allowing parents in early recovery to live with their children while addressing past trauma tied to addiction. Because they also run shelter programs, they help these families work toward permanent affordable housing, with the goal of breaking the cycle of addiction across generations.
