About Mental Health Resources Inc
Mental Health Resources, Inc. is a private nonprofit behavioral health agency serving Portales and the surrounding communities of Eastern New Mexico, offering both mental health and substance use care. They grew out of a community resource center started by Eastern New Mexico University faculty and staff in the early 1970s and became an independent agency in 1976. They treat substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders through outpatient counseling, an intensive outpatient program, ongoing recovery groups, and Medication Assisted Treatment, alongside crisis services, psychiatry, and telehealth. No one is turned away for inability to pay, and a sliding fee scale based on household size and income is available.
Care starts with an assessment and planning session with a therapist to match each person with the right level of support. Substance use treatment is delivered at their Curry County offices but is open to residents of every community they serve. The intensive outpatient program is time-limited and structured, combining group sessions three times a week with individual counseling that addresses underlying mental health concerns along with early recovery and relapse prevention. After IOP, clients can step down to outpatient substance use groups that also meet three times weekly, while individual and family counseling, peer support, and community support services are available to anyone 14 and older, with full confidentiality.
