Mel Med LLC is a solo private addiction medicine practice in Spartanburg, South Carolina, led by Dr. Melissa Fritsche, who is board certified in both Addiction Medicine and Family Medicine. They opened in 2018 and treat addiction as a bio-psycho-social-spiritual disease, with the view that recovery means redefining life goals rather than simply stopping a substance. Care is outpatient and includes medication for opioid, alcohol, and nicotine addiction, outpatient detox from opioids and alcohol, and help tapering off Suboxone, methadone, and benzodiazepines. Telemedicine visits are also available for patients who can’t always come into the office.

Every patient gets an individualized recovery plan that pairs medication with encouragement to engage in therapy, self-help groups, meditation, community service, and self-care. Harm reduction is central to the practice, so they prescribe Narcan and needles, offer free naloxone kits, and test for and help treat Hepatitis C for people who aren’t ready to stop using. A Friday morning recovery drumming class gives patients a social, hands-on way to rebuild connection, and they keep a calendar of local AA, NA, Al-Anon, Celebrate Recovery, and FAVOR meetings. They also emphasize accepting, non-discriminatory care for transgender patients, who face higher risks of addiction, depression, and HIV.
