About MATClinics

MATClinics in Dundalk, Maryland, is part of a network of eight outpatient addiction clinics across the state that center care on medication-assisted treatment (MAT). They treat opioid use disorder, including heroin, fentanyl, and prescription pain pills, along with alcohol use disorder and stimulant use disorder involving cocaine, methamphetamine, and Adderall. Care is entirely outpatient, with individual and group counseling plus an intensive outpatient program (IOP), so patients can keep up with work and family life. They view addiction as a chronic, treatable medical condition rather than a lack of willpower, and they measure progress by health, stability, relationships, and quality of life, not abstinence alone.

For opioid use, patients can choose from Suboxone, Zubsolv, monthly Sublocade or Brixadi injections, or Vivitrol, and clinicians follow fentanyl-specific induction protocols to help avoid precipitated withdrawal. Alcohol treatment uses naltrexone, disulfiram, and acamprosate, and the team assesses withdrawal risk at the first visit and helps arrange medically supervised detox elsewhere when it’s needed. Although no FDA-approved medication exists for stimulant use disorder, they may use Vivitrol, bupropion, disulfiram, or topiramate, paired with behavioral therapy and screening for fentanyl exposure. Counseling, mental health therapy, and psychiatry are available to every patient, but most aren’t required to use them. Each patient also gets a case manager reachable by call or text around the clock, and same-day starts, evening and Saturday hours, and coverage through Maryland Medicaid, Medicare Part B, and CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield make getting started easier.
