About Market Street Mission
Market Street Mission in Morristown, New Jersey, is a Christian rescue mission that has served people facing addiction, homelessness, and hunger since 1889, when it opened as a residential program for men struggling with alcohol. Today their main recovery offering is the Life Change Program, a long-term residential program for men that is completely free and requires no insurance. Grounded in faith in Jesus, the program aims for more than abstinence, working toward lasting changes in thinking and daily habits. Residents receive 12-step work, individual and group counseling, life skills classes, and help with medical, legal, and ID needs, while the Mission also provides emergency shelter and free daily meals.
The program unfolds in stages, starting with a month-long pre-program in which a man lives on-site and both he and the staff decide whether the program is a good fit. Phase 1 centers on work therapy to rebuild physical health, structure, and a work ethic. Phase 2 moves into classes taught by staff and local clergy on relapse prevention and chemical dependency, anger management, fatherhood, financial management, employment skills, and Christian doctrine. After graduating, men can stay three months at no cost while finding work, move into one of five reduced-rent sober living homes in Morris and Monmouth Counties, apply for an internship of up to two years, or draw on an alumni scholarship fund for further education.
