About Lokahi Treatment Centers

Lokahi Treatment Centers is an outpatient substance use and mental health treatment provider serving Kailua Kona and the wider Hawaiʻi Island through five offices that reach rural, medically underserved communities. Dr. Jamal F. Wasan founded the organization in the late 1990s, during the Big Island’s crystal methamphetamine epidemic, under the name Waikoloa Community-Based Substance Abuse Rehabilitation and Recovery Program. He soon broadened the work into an integrated model that also addresses the mental health and anger issues that often accompany drug use. Today they offer culturally grounded, structured outpatient care for adults, adolescents, and children, built on personal responsibility, dignity, and a non-judgmental, strength-based approach, and they have held CARF accreditation since 2002.

Treatment combines cognitive behavioral therapy with existential psychotherapy, helping clients identify their own reasons for change and build practical strategies for emotional, cognitive, and spiritual growth. Care often begins with an assessment, and they offer substance use, mental health, psychiatric, anger management, and domestic violence intervention evaluations. Ongoing services include gender-specific and mixed substance use groups, a co-occurring disorders program, individual counseling, family therapy, medication management, anger management, and domestic violence intervention classes, with referrals to community resources to support continued recovery. They accept most types of medical insurance, and their experience with criminal justice populations may be useful to people with court-related treatment requirements.
