About Lokahi Treatment Centers

Lokahi Treatment Centers is a CARF-accredited outpatient behavioral health organization with five offices across Hawai’i Island, including the Pahoa area. They serve adults, adolescents, and children in rural, medically underserved communities. Dr. Jamal F. Wasan founded the program in the late 1990s as the crystal meth epidemic grew on the Big Island. They soon broadened their focus beyond drug use to include mental health and anger issues, and today they offer integrated dual diagnosis care in a structured outpatient setting built on personal responsibility, dignity, and respect for local cultural values.

Treatment combines cognitive behavioral therapy with existential psychotherapy, helping each person find their own reason to change and build practical strategies for emotional and spiritual growth. Care usually starts with an assessment, such as a substance use, mental health, psychiatric, anger management, or domestic violence intervention evaluation. From there, clients may join gender-specific or mixed substance use groups, co-occurring disorder treatment, individual counseling, family therapy, psychiatric care, or medication management. They also run anger management programs for every age group and domestic violence intervention classes, and they hold special accreditation for working with youth and people involved in the criminal justice system. They accept most medical insurance and connect clients with other community resources to support ongoing recovery.
