About La Frontera Center
La Frontera Center is a nonprofit community behavioral health organization in Tucson, Arizona, and one of the largest providers of mental health and substance use care in the southern part of the state. Founded in 1968 as one of the country’s original community mental health centers, they have long focused on serving people with limited financial means and residents from culturally diverse backgrounds. They treat substance use disorders, co-occurring mental health and addiction issues, and serious mental illness, with services spread across many sites in metropolitan Tucson and the rest of Pima County. Care is available regardless of ability to pay, and a sliding fee scale based on household size and income can lower costs for those who qualify.
Their dual diagnosis work is a particular strength and has earned national recognition, which makes them a practical option for someone facing addiction alongside depression, anxiety, or another psychiatric condition. They run separate programs for children, adolescents, and adults, so families can find age-appropriate care through a single organization. Their clinical work is informed by ongoing program evaluation and by research and demonstration grants from federal agencies, including CSAP, CSAT, and NIDA. As part of the larger La Frontera Arizona network, they are connected to related services such as suicide prevention and crisis support, foster care for youth, and peer support and navigation for veterans and military families.
