Kentucky River Community Care is a community behavioral health organization serving Whitesburg and the surrounding Letcher County area, along with Breathitt, Knott, Lee, Leslie, Owsley, Perry, and Wolfe Counties in eastern Kentucky. They provide both substance use and mental health care through county-based outpatient clinics, where licensed or credentialed professionals offer individual, group, and family therapy as well as medication management. Their services are delivered with a trauma-informed approach, and they offer 24-hour crisis support. Cost shouldn’t be a barrier: no one is turned away for inability to pay, and fees are discounted based on household size and income.

Alongside general outpatient care, they run several specialized substance use programs, most of which require a referral from the courts. Their Drug Court program pairs in-depth assessment with individual and group therapy, recovery education, residential treatment in planned housing when needed, and aftercare with case management, while staff keep the court informed of each participant’s progress. The DUI program starts with a clinical interview and the Kentucky Assessment Battery, followed by a 20-hour pre-treatment course and evidence-based outpatient therapy, with referrals to residential facilities when a higher level of care is needed. For people under 21 who have come before the courts over violence, alcohol, tobacco, other drugs, or impaired driving, an Early Intervention program focuses on safer decision-making, stronger family relationships, and preventing repeat offenses, and free interpreters and other communication supports are available for Deaf, hard of hearing, and limited-English clients.
