About Juel Fairbanks
Juel Fairbanks Recovery Services is a nonprofit addiction treatment center in Saint Paul, Minnesota, founded by a Native American and focused on serving Native American men with substance use disorders. Their approach blends evidence-based, person-centered care with culturally responsive services, and Native American cultural practices are woven throughout the programming. They offer a 24-bed, 90-day low-intensity residential program, a structured 12-step outpatient program for men, and a 20-bed housing support program for adults in recovery. The center is state licensed under Minnesota Rule 245G and is funded largely through grants, private insurance, and Minnesota’s Rule 31 funding.
In residential treatment, licensed alcohol and drug counselors lead individual sessions on treatment planning and aftercare, along with at least 15 hours of group work each week covering topics like emotional regulation, co-occurring disorders, living skills, men’s health, and the Red Road, all anchored by a daily morning ceremony and meditation. Residents also take part in recreational therapy and closed AA/NA meetings, and acupuncture is available through a consulting acupuncturist. The outpatient track runs about 198 hours of group sessions over a tapering four-day, then three-day weekly schedule, paired with 20 weeks of one-on-one counseling focused on relapse prevention, relationships, and recovery maintenance. For those who need stable footing afterward, the housing support program provides case management toward permanent housing, education, employment, and health care, with stays ranging from 30 days to two years and averaging about six months.
