About HopeWorks
HopeWorks is an Albuquerque, New Mexico, nonprofit and one of the state’s largest homeless service providers, and they also operate as a Community Mental Health Center. Founded in 1985 by the local Episcopal community, they frame their mission as “healing homelessness,” treating it as a community problem rooted in trauma rather than a personal failing. They take a whole-person approach covering mind, body, and spirit. Their behavioral health services include outpatient individual and group therapy, medication prescribing and management, and case management, and these are open to anyone regardless of housing situation or insurance status.
For people living with severe and persistent mental illness, often alongside substance use disorders and medical conditions, their Assertive Community Treatment team delivers multidisciplinary support out in the community, functioning much like a hospital without walls. Their psychosocial rehabilitation program is a voluntary, clubhouse-style day program with no time limit, focused on daily living skills, social skills, therapeutic socialization, and personal empowerment. Hope Village provides 42 units of permanent supportive housing with round-the-clock staff and onsite mental and behavioral health care, set in buildings designed around trauma-informed principles. HopeWorks also runs a Housing First program, a day shelter offering meals, showers, and connections to clinical support, street outreach, and a three-to-six-month re-entry program that helps people leaving the criminal justice system with case management, employment, and housing.
