About Heartland Center for Behavioral Change
Heartland Center for Behavioral Change is a nonprofit organization in Kansas City, Missouri, that has provided substance use disorder treatment and reentry services to Missouri residents since 1982. They approach addiction as a progressive disease rather than a personal failing, and they encourage people to seek professional help as early as possible. Their care includes a stand-alone inpatient withdrawal management facility for people who need medical monitoring through acute alcohol or drug withdrawal, along with intensive outpatient and outpatient treatment. With support from public funding, Missouri Medicaid, and the state Department of Mental Health, services are open to people who might otherwise struggle to pay for care.
Much of their work supports people whose substance use has led to legal trouble. They partner with the Jackson County Drug Court and the Kansas City Municipal Treatment Court, and they run a Community Residential Unit that provides housing, meals, and basic daily needs for clients who require a residential setting. They also offer the Substance Abuse Traffic Offender Program (SATOP), and their medication-assisted treatment pairs medications with counseling and behavioral therapies to help reduce cravings. For people managing serious chronic health conditions alongside substance use, outreach workers help coordinate medical, psychiatric, and addiction care, while counselors, case managers, and peer support specialists work with clients throughout their recovery.
