Healthcare Alternative Systems (HAS) is a Chicago nonprofit that has offered multicultural, bilingual behavioral health and social services for more than 50 years, with a focus on communities the health care system tends to overlook. They treat alcohol and other substance use disorders alongside mental health, domestic violence, and anger management services, and they keep their care affordable, so most participants come from low-income households. Levels of care include outpatient and intensive outpatient groups, a men’s 28-day residential program, and transitional housing for men experiencing homelessness. Care starts with a full biopsychosocial assessment, which shapes an individualized plan that treats addiction as a manageable health condition.

In residential treatment, adult men take part in group, individual, and family therapy plus life skills education, with counseling, case management, and job readiness support built into their stay. Adults with opioid use disorder can receive medication for cravings and withdrawal through the MOUD program, paired with counseling. A DUI program meets court-mandated class requirements, and graduates can join monthly continuing care groups or work with a mentor in recovery through Recovery Support Services. The transitional housing program pairs each man with a recovery coach, housing specialist, and peer mentor, and community outreach adds naloxone distribution, overdose reversal training, harm reduction supplies, and gambling disorder prevention.
