About Guidance Center

The Guidance Center is a nonprofit behavioral health agency headquartered in Leavenworth, Kansas, and serves as the Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic for Atchison, Jefferson, and Leavenworth Counties. They began in 1937 as a child guidance clinic in Atchison and now support children, adolescents, adults, and families dealing with serious mental illness, substance use, trauma, grief, and other life challenges. Their care centers on outpatient services, with referrals to and transitions from inpatient care when needed. They prioritize people with the greatest need regardless of ability to pay and are the only psychiatry provider in the three-county area offering a sliding fee scale.

Adults can access substance abuse treatment alongside individual, group, and family therapy, psychiatric care and medication management, case management, peer support, behavioral health assessments, and telehealth, all delivered with a trauma-informed approach. Young people have their own track that includes psychological testing, school-based services, psychosocial groups, parent support, attendant care, and a structured summer program focused on emotional regulation and social skills. Anyone in crisis can reach a 24/7 crisis line, and the Guiding Lights Crisis Stabilization Center in Leavenworth offers urgent help. They also provide NeuroStar TMS therapy for depression that hasn’t responded to medication, and they partner with the Leavenworth Sheriff’s Office on a jail-based behavioral health liaison role created to address the opioid crisis.
