Great Lakes Recovery Centers is a nonprofit, CARF-accredited behavioral health organization serving Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and their Munising Outpatient clinic is one of several community locations across the region. They treat substance use disorders, mental health conditions, and co-occurring disorders in adults, adolescents, and children, and they view addiction as a disease that affects whole families and communities, with more than one pathway to recovery. Their care spans outpatient counseling, adult and adolescent residential treatment, and certified men’s and women’s recovery housing, with referrals to detox when needed. Every client starts with a phone screening and assessment through a central Access Center, and help is available to people with limited financial resources.

Outpatient care typically combines individual and group therapy, clinically supervised AA- and NA-based meetings for enrolled clients, and medication-assisted treatment from physicians and nurse practitioners who also handle general health needs. A care coordination model called Compass Care brings counselors, community health workers, medical providers, and peer supports together, helping clients with practical needs like transportation, food assistance, insurance questions, and MDHHS applications, with sessions available in person, by phone, or through telehealth. Peer recovery coaching, readjustment counseling for veterans, and women and family case management are offered in select counties, while adolescent clinicians specialize in childhood, intergenerational, and neurodevelopmental trauma. Teens in residential care live on-site, attend several hours of therapy daily, and continue school, and adult residential clients have access to spiritual care services.
