Great Lakes Recovery Centers is a nonprofit, CARF-accredited behavioral health organization serving Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and their Ironwood outpatient clinic is one of several sites across the region. They treat substance use disorder as a disease that touches individuals, families, and whole communities, and they believe people can reach recovery through more than one path. Every client starts with a screening and assessment through a central Access Center, which then matches them with outpatient counseling, referral to detox, residential treatment at one of their adult or adolescent facilities, or recovery housing. They also aim to serve people with limited financial resources and accept self-referrals as well as referrals from family members, physicians, and community agencies.

Outpatient care centers on individual counseling and weekly therapy groups, along with clinician-supervised AA- and NA-based meetings open only to enrolled clients, plus court and DMV assessments. Some locations add mental health care for adults, adolescents, and children, and their physician- and nurse practitioner-led medical programs offer medication-assisted treatment alongside general health care. A coordinated Compass Care team of counselors, community health workers, medical providers, and peer supports can help with practical needs such as transportation, MDHHS applications, food assistance, and insurance questions, with sessions available in person, by phone, or through telehealth. Clients may also be referred internally to peer recovery coaching, while teens can attend a residential program with daily therapy and on-site schooling, and adults can move into MARR- and NARR-certified men’s or women’s recovery housing.
